Group seeks Kogi governor’s resignation over non-payment of workers’ salaries
The United Global Resolve for Peace (UGRP), a non-governmental organisation (NGO), has demanded the immediate resignation of Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello over the non-payment of workers’ salaries.
It said Bello’s mismanagement and abuse of office led to the death of a director in the state civil service, Edward Soje, who was being owed 11 months salaries.
The group also demanded the disengagement and prosecution of the state Head of Service (HoS), Deborah Ogunmola, for her sadistic and unsympathetic stance toward Soje’s death and other civil servants in the state.
The UGRP condemned the HoS, who it said acted under the guise of undertaking an act of executive judgment of the deceased by withholding his 11 months salary and abandoning him to die in misery.
The group in a statement by its Executive Director, Olaseni Shalom, in Abuja, said the state government should apologise to the family of late the Soje and compensate them with N10 million for their negligence and nonchalant attitude towards the plight of workers.
“We, at the UGRP insist that the governor should resign and the HoS removed from office with immediate effect in the interest of the state.
“We may be constrained to avert the terrible famine looming over Kogi State by initiating steps and actions within our capabilities to see to their exit from office.
“We further demand that Mrs Deborah Ogunmola be prosecuted by the Attorney-General of the state for the crime of manslaughter with regard to Soje’s death, as she had no power to carry out a sentence of a court of law by withholding his salaries for almost a year and leaving him to die as a result of the depression occasioned by the artificial poverty,” the group said.
The group, therefore, gave the state government a seven-day ultimatum to provide answers to some questions that led to its inability to pay workers salaries or be prepared to face a damaging legal consequence before local and international courts of law.
