Labour congratulates Buhari, urges improved welfare for workers

Related

Organised labour under the aegis of Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN), the Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the members of Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), and Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), have congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari for his re-election.

Congratulating the President, labour urged him to work towards improving the living conditions of workers.

Part of the welfare package they seek is the implementation of the new national minimum wage as soon as the Senate passes the Bill, even as the House of Representatives had already played its role.

With the enormous challenges before the new administration, the unions urged that the President brings fresh and positive perspectives to bear on governance, as is the case in advanced economies of the world.

In separate statements, the unions pledged their support to co-operate and work assiduously with the new administration, as part of efforts to diversify the economy.

The unions commended President Buhari for keeping faith with the covenant he entered into with Nigerian workers not to embark on retrenchment, and at the same time ensure the prompt payment of public service workers.

ASCSN added: “We have no doubt whatsoever that those who were inadvertently omitted or were short-paid during the exercise will be settled soonest in order to bring this ugly chapter in the federal public service to a positive end.”
