LASG tasks workers on leadership training to boost productivity
Lagos State Governor, Akiwunmi Ambode disclosed this at the opening session of a two-day workshop tagged, “Managerial Skills and Personal Effectiveness”.
Organised by the Lagos State Ministry of Establishments, Training and Pensions, Ambode, who was represented by the Commissioner for Establishments, Training and Pensions, Dr Akintola Benson Oke, said that institutions must have clearly-defined missions that are relevant to the needs and aspirations of their stakeholders in a dynamic age of constant changes.
Ambode, who emphasised that maximisation of efficiency and achievement of organisational goals was one of the top priorities of his administration, posited that the right, consistent managerial leadership can increase the productivity of the people in an organisation.
Besides, he contended that workers are retained on their jobs through good and effective managerial leadership, saying it had been proved that 75per cent of people voluntarily leaving jobs don’t quit their jobs but in fact quit their managers.
“This means that employees leave because of ineffective managers and managers with poor managerial skills. By investing in managerial leadership training, an organisation can retain its people and reduce costly recruitment expenses,” he said.
According to the Governor, organisations needed to be strategic about developing and nurturing future managers but lamented that without a strategy, managerial leadership roles were often given to the most forward candidates with dominant personalities whereas quality managerial leadership is a combination of the right qualities and the right training.
“Through managerial leadership training, an organisation can teach effective ways to give feedback to motivate and increase the skill level of their people,” Governor Ambode said.
“In order to actualise the vision, however, managers must be trained to possess both the hard and soft skills that are fundamental to success. This is where this training programme becomes relevant,” he added.
“It is my fervent hope that all the participants will leave this training better equipped to effectively discharge their roles as managers in the different departments and units of the Lagos State Public Service. The attainment of this core objective of the training will ensure that the vision of the Governor Akinwunmi Ambode administration for a Lagos State that can compete with the most admires global cities is realised,” he added further.
