The Precision, Electrical and Related Equipment Senior Staff Association (PERESSA) has honoured the retiring State Controller, Lagos, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Eshomounu Itemoagbo, for his outstanding contributions to industrial harmony, describing him as a principled public servant whose commitment to dialogue and dedication to fair workplace practices has helped strengthen labour relations in the state.

The honour was bestowed at a retirement ceremony attended by labour leaders, employers’ representatives and trade unionists, who commended the Labour Controller for promoting peaceful dispute resolution and maintaining cordial relationships with workers and employers throughout his years in office.

Presenting the honour, PERESSA President, Rufus Olusesan, said Itemoagbo made remarkable contributions to trade unionism and industrial relations by fostering constructive engagement among stakeholders rather than waiting until conflicts arose.

He used the occasion to express concern over Nigeria’s economic situation, lamenting that despite its enormous natural
and human resources, the country remained trapped in poverty due to corruption and poor governance.

According to him, the nation’s wealth is concentrated in the hands of less than five per cent of the population, while the vast majority of Nigerians struggle to survive.

Olusesan urged organised labour to negotiate a national minimum wage that reflects prevailing economic realities and is acceptable to Nigerian workers.

He also called on the Federal Government to revive the Ajaokuta Steel Company and make it fully operational to enable local production of steel, copper and aluminium, saying the country loses billions of naira yearly importing raw materials that could be produced domestically.

He further advocated the rehabilitation of the nation’s refineries, noting that increased local production would reduce dependence on imports, conserve foreign exchange and stimulate industrial growth.

Responding to the honour, Itemoagbo described completing his public service career as a fulfilling milestone, saying he remained committed to professionalism despite the challenges encountered in office.

He attributed the industrial peace recorded during his tenure to mutual respect, open communication and strict adherence to labour laws.In his remarks, Chairman of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), Lagos State Council, Abiodun Aladetan, described Itemoagbo as an exceptional labour administrator who distinguished himself through integrity, courage and fairness.
