‘Why safety measures in workplace environment is important’
The Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC), has pledged to continue to uphold best global acceptable safety measures in its operations in the country.Managing Director of the Company, Mansur Sambo, disclosed during NPDC “2019 Health Safety and Environment Week,” held in Benin City, Edo State.
Sambo said: “We need to sensitize our staff because in the environment we operate, we deal with heavy equipment. NPDC is the Exploration and Production of upstream arm. And this event is very significant being the watchdog of safety.
“All these items need to be handled in a globally acceptable manner. Safety is a global concern because there is no price to life and properties. No matter what you are paid in insurance, you cannot recover once you lose them.”
He further noted that the recent fire incident in Egbama community in Imo State “occurred far away from NPDC well head,” adding that the “Egbema fire incident did not happen as a result of our operations. What happened was that all the oil that was vandalized came out of the ground. The most interesting thing is that we took care of it in record time without any fatality.”
Also, a Professor of Obstreosis and Gynaecology at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Anthony Okonkwo, advocated low consumption of livestock products to mitigate its impact on humans, adding that the intake of soya beans and beans in place of livestock is better.
In a paper entitled, ‘Reducing business risk through good environmental stewardship’ Prof Okonkwo said livestock have the capacity of producing methane that helps trap down heat within the earth.“Methane is a greenhouse gas and greenhouse gas is one of the things that help trap heat within the earth. We have noticed that the weather is hotter than normal. And the hotter the weather is, the more rain we have,” he stated.
