Workers’ rights, welfare and economic justice will come under scrutiny as the Labour Writers Association of Nigeria (LAWAN) convenes labour leaders, government representatives and academics to examine the place of workers in Nigeria’s political transition.
The association’s 2026 conference, scheduled for October 30, in Lagos, will focus on defending workers’ rights, advancing welfare and promoting economic justice amid the country’s political transition.
The conference, themed: “Workers at the Centre of Nigeria’s Political Transition: Defending Rights, Advancing Welfare and Building Economic Justice,” is expected to provide a platform for discussions on issues affecting Nigerian workers.
The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, and his Trade Union Congress (TUC) counterpart, Festus Osifo, are among the labour leaders expected to participate.
The Managing Director of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF), Oluwaseun Faleye, and the Director-General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), Omolola Oloworaran, are listed as keynote speakers.
Other speakers include Prof. Tunde Akanni of Lagos State University (LASU); Dr Ganiu Okunnu, a senior lecturer in LASU’s Department of Public Relations and Advertising; and Ismail Bello, Deputy General Secretary of the NLC.
The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Mohammed Maigari Dingyadi, and the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, are listed as special guests of honour.
According to LAWAN Chairman, Toba Agboola, the theme reflected the association’s determination to place workers’ welfare and labour rights at the centre of discussions on Nigeria’s political transition, with an emphasis on economic justice and improved well-being.
