Evoking nostalgic feelings in folktales
For Andy Odogwu, the author of The Origin of The Tortoise and Why Cats Kill Rats, bringing local folklores in basic education classes is highly essential.
According to him, the purpose of writing the book is to teach children good behaviours, and at the same time, improving their comprehension, reading and writing abilities.
He added that it is hoped that children in basic classes three to nine will find it useful as a supplementary reader, while it also serves as a moral lesson manual for all other children in their formative stages.
In his forward to the book, Education Consultant and former principal, St. Gregory’s College, Obalende Lagos and St. Finbarr’s College Akoka Lagos, said, “the piece evokes feelings of nostalgia about the “Tales by Moonlight” of our pre-independence days in Nigeria.
