For Coca-Cola, 75 years of operations in Nigeria is no mean feat. Within the period, it has achieved the status of not only a household name, but the standard by which other carbonated drinks are measured.
As part of the events to mark the momentous achievement, the brand recently recorded a special song that was led by John Ighodaro, popularly called Johnny Drille.
For him, the assignment presented an opportunity to celebrate people who have kept the brand as part of everyday Nigerian life for three-quarters of a century.
Drille was very excited to work on the project because of the magnitude of the song and the impact it would have, storytelling-wise, for such a grand occassion.
The 75 anniversary anthem is a four-minute-plus track opens with a chant of ‘Coca-Cola’, accompanied by an effervescent sound that seems to mimic the bubbles of the drink rushing to the top as a bottle is opened.
It then segues into a pulsating percussion beat, evoking the memory of when you drank a chilled one and felt goosebumps in its wake.
From there, Drille’s voice carries the song, capturing the brand’s enduring presence in Nigeria. Each hook and line tells a story, particularly, the line about Coca-Cola finding its way into many Nigerian occasions, even office meetings. This keen observation feels familiar to anyone who has grown up with the drink. Indeed, it has become a family member as the lyrics portrayed.
Drille is one of the nation’s best-loved voices. Having grown up singing in his church choir, he also competed on MTN Project Fame West Africa in 2013.
He was subsequently signed by Don Jazzy to Mavin Records in 2017, and he has since built a name for warm, emotional songs like Wait For Me and Loving is harder. His Johnny’s Room Live tours sell out year after year.
Drille’s voice carries the kind of warmth and nostalgia that fits a 75-year milestone.
With a community choir that featured on his own debut album, so a 75-person choir isn’t a gimmick for him, it’s close to home.
Known for personal, heartfelt music that connects across generations, the same thing it has been to Nigerian families for 75 years.
The anthem was made with a 75-person choir, one voice for every year the brand has been in Nigeria, so the sound itself carries the idea of many generations coming together.
But the beauty of the anthem lies in its harmonisation. Each time the backing singers come together, they evoke a sense of nostalgia, bringing back the many moments we have shared with Coke. At home, in the office, at parties, while visiting a friend or stopping at a roadside shop to grab a bottle and escape the sweltering heat, there always seems to be a Coke somewhere in the picture.
The energy was warm, nostalgic and communal, built around 75 years of shared Nigerian moments which include, weddings, birthdays, family gatherings and everyday life affairs.
As part ofthe ongoing 75th anniversary campaign, which has already included new anniversary packaging and nationwide consumer activities.
Recall that the brand launched a nationwide campaign to celebrate its 75th anniversary in Nigeria, introducing limited-edition 60cl PET bottles and a series of consumer-focused activities aimed at rewarding loyal customers and strengthening its connection with the nation’s consumers.
The anniversary packs, available in Coca-Cola Less Sugar, Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, Fanta and Sprite variants, offer 20 per cent more value than the standard 50cl bottles, giving consumers an additional 10cl at no extra cost.
