…as FAAN says no casualties recorded

A fire outbreak on Sunday affected a section of Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, prompting an emergency response by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

FAAN, which confirmed the incident, said that no lives were lost.

The fire, which occurred at the international terminal, triggered the immediate deployment of FAAN’s Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting Service (ARFFS), as firefighters worked to contain the inferno and prevent it from spreading to other parts of the terminal.

In a statement, FAAN assured passengers, airlines and other airport users that the situation was under control, adding that there were no reported casualties.

“The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) wishes to inform the public that a fire incident has occurred at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

“The FAAN Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting Service (ARFFS) is currently responding to the incident and working diligently to contain the situation. There have been no reported casualties or loss of life,” the authority said.

Although the cause of the fire had yet to be established as of press time, airport emergency procedures were activated to ensure the safety of passengers, airport personnel and airline operations within the facility.

FAAN emphasised that it would provide further information on the cause of the incident, the extent of damage and any impact on flight operations after a comprehensive assessment by emergency responders.

The fire incident is coming barely six months after another fire outbreak at the old international terminal of the Murtala Muhammed Airport.

The fire outbreak led to the eventual demolition of the terminal, which is presently under reconstruction.
