Tension erupted in the Ogolonto area of Ikorodu, Lagos State, after a fatal road accident involving a Bus Rapid Transit vehicle and a commercial motorcyclist escalated into mob violence, leaving the bus engulfed in flames.
The incident reportedly occurred after the BRT bus crushed the motorcyclist to death, triggering an angry reaction from residents and youths in the area.
As outrage spread following the reported death, the crowd allegedly set the bus ablaze, turning the scene of the fatal collision into a scene of destruction.
Police officers and officials of the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps reportedly intervened to rescue the bus driver from the angry crowd, preventing the situation from escalating further.
The circumstances surrounding the crash remained unclear as of the time of filing this report. The identity of the deceased motorcyclist had also not been confirmed.
An X user, #kinglammyjames, who shared details of the incident, wrote, “Live at OGOLONTO.
“A bike man was crushed to death by the BRT Bus and in turn, the STREET BOYS burned down the BRT Bus.”
It was also unclear whether authorities had arrested anyone in connection with the incident or the destruction of the vehicle.
The incident raises fresh concerns about road safety and the dangers of mob action following fatal accidents, particularly when anger gives way to violence before the circumstances of a crash can be fully established.
While the motorcyclist’s reported death has heightened tensions in the community, the burning of the BRT bus adds another layer of concern over public safety and the destruction of public transport assets.
