Kano State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Dangote Group of Companies, and Black Rhino Group, worth $150 million for execution of Solar Power project in the state.

The Solar power project is meant to improve the economy of Kano, and position it as a great centre of commerce in the sub-Sahara Africa.

Signing on behalf of the Government, Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Usman Alhaji, said the Government found it pertinent to embark on the project to improve the economic wellbeing of its people.

According to the SSG, “We need energy to make any progress and development anywhere in the World, so we believe this is a right step in the right direction. I wish to also reiterate that the Kano State Government is very keen on this project, and we are doing everything possible, under the leadership of Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, to improve the life and living conditions of the people of Kano State.”

Signing on behalf of Dangote Group, its Executive Director, Manusr Ahmed, noted that the gross inadequacy of supply and unreliable and unaffordable electricity is one of the critical challenges confronting the State, and indeed the entire national economy.

He added that granting of a sizeable land on which the project would be sited will no doubt accelerate the delivery of the mega power project.

The power project will be completed within 24 months, and expected to generate 100 Megawatts of clean electricity, not only for the industries in the state but also for domestic use.

The project, which will be jointly financed by the Dangote Industries Limited, and the Black Rhino Group, is expected to provide a state of the art renewable energy plant, which would convert the abundant energy of the sun into high quality clean electricity.

One of the vital aspect of the project, he said is that the plant would source its basic raw material from the environment, stressing that they are committed to commence the project as soon as possible.
