The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has called for a robust security framework to address emerging risks in the maritime domain amid a rapidly changing global environment.

The Managing Director of the NPA, Dr Abubakar Dantsoho, said a proactive approach to maritime security is essential to maintaining Nigeria’s position as a key player in global trade and to mitigating threats that could disrupt operations within the sector.

Speaking at the 2024 National Conference of the Port Facility Security Officers Forum of Nigeria, Dantsoho, highlighted its pivotal role in facilitating international trade, safeguarding national interests and ensuring the safety of seafarers, port workers and the marine ecosystem.

He stressed the need for a comprehensive review of the implementation of the International Ships and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code to enhance security across the nation’s maritime industry.

Dantsoho stated that a review would position Nigeria to develop innovative solutions to ensure its ports and shipping lanes remain secure, resilient, and globally competitive.

He emphasised the importance of adapting to modern maritime security challenges.

Reflecting on the evolution of maritime security over the past two decades, Dantsoho highlighted the critical role the ISPS Code has played since its implementation in 2004.

He described it as a “game changer” that has addressed emerging threats such as piracy, terrorism, and illicit trafficking in the maritime sector.

He pointed out that the adoption of the ISPS Code marked a pivotal moment for Nigeria, enabling the country to invest in robust security systems and frameworks.

Dantsoho said this effort not only secured the nation’s ports but also enhanced its reputation as a safe and reliable maritime logistics hub in Africa.

The NPA boss noted significant strides made in recent years, including infrastructure upgrades, the adoption of advanced security technologies, and increased training for port security personnel.

These initiatives, he said, reflect the collaborative efforts of stakeholders, including federal and state agencies, port operators, and international partners.

Dantsoho said substantial investments in new security measures and technologies, alongside personnel training, have ensured compliance and proactive responses to emerging threats.

However, he stressed the need for continued vigilance and adaptation to address evolving risks faced on the seas.

Dantsoho commended the collective efforts of stakeholders in maintaining a secure maritime environment, asserting that Nigeria’s commitment to implementing the ISPS Code extends beyond regulatory compliance.
