The National Pension Commission (PenCom) is targeting about N300 billion in pension fund commitments for critical infrastructure projects, with actual deployment expected to begin by the second quarter of 2027.

The Director-General of PenCom, Omolola Oloworaran, disclosed this yesterday in Lagos after a meeting of the Pension Industry Leaders Council (PILC).

She said pension fund operators had already committed N241 billion under an infrastructure investment framework developed in partnership with FSD Africa, with the commitment expected to rise to nearly N300 billion as outstanding commitments are received.

According to her, the initiative would mobilise pension capital for long-term infrastructure financing while providing pension funds with assets capable of generating inflation-adjusted returns.

“This is the very first step we are taking as an industry, and this is just the beginning because this is a sector we are committed to,” she said.

Oloworaran said the infrastructure initiative was part of a broader transformation agenda for the pension industry.

She disclosed that PenCom had approved an independent global benchmark maturity assessment of Nigeria’s pension industry to measure the sector against international standards in corporate governance, market compliance and operational practices.

She also said PenCom and pension industry leaders were formalising the Pension Transformation Agenda 2030 to consolidate ongoing reforms and establish strategic priorities for the sector.

According to her, the agenda would focus on industry growth and the impact of pension reforms on ordinary Nigerians and their retirement outcomes.

“The session we had today was not just about what we are doing today, but where we all want to be as an industry and the impact we want to make in the lives of ordinary Nigerians by 2030,” she said.

PenCom also announced that the 2026 National Pension Week would hold from October 26 to 30.
