Pension assets rebound by N480b in four months, hit N31.8 trillion

National Pension Commission (PENCOM)

Nigeria’s pension industry staged a strong recovery from its June downturn, with total pension assets rising by about N480 billion between May and August 2026 to N31.8 trillion, signalling renewed growth in retirement savings.

The increase, representing about 1.5 per cent growth over the four months, restored the industry’s asset base after the June decline and reinforced the expanding role of pension funds as a major pool of long-term capital in the Nigerian economy.

The latest monthly pension industry performance reports released by the National Pension Commission (PenCom) showed that pension assets remained above N31 trillion for most of the period, despite the sharp contraction in June.

In May 2026, pension fund assets stood at N31.32 trillion, up from N30.63 trillion in April, representing a monthly increase of about N690 billion.

The assets, however, fell to N30.69 trillion in June, a decline of approximately N630 billion from the previous month.

The downturn was reversed in July, when pension assets jumped to N31.51 trillion, translating into a monthly increase of about N820 billion.

The upward trajectory continued into August, with total pension assets climbing further to approximately N31.8 trillion, an increase of nearly N290 billion over July.

The movement was also reflected in pension fund investments in Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) securities.

Holdings in FGN securities stood at approximately N17.47 trillion in May, slipped marginally to N17.44 trillion in June, before rising to N17.6 trillion in July and reaching about N17.8 trillion in August.

This represents an increase of approximately N330 billion between May and August.

The figures underline the continued importance of government securities in the investment portfolio of Nigeria’s pension industry, even as pension fund managers maintain exposure to other asset classes.

The market-related component of pension assets also recorded significant movement during the period.

Market assets stood at about N3.01 trillion in May, falling to N2.93 trillion in June before surging to approximately N3.38 trillion in July. They subsequently moderated to around N3.27 trillion in August, leaving the August position about N260 billion higher than the May level.

The July surge was therefore followed by a modest correction in August, although market assets remained above their May and June levels.

While asset values fluctuated, the number of Retirement Savings Account (RSA) holders continued to rise steadily.

The number of RSA members increased from approximately 11.27 million in May to 11.31 million in June,

11.35 million in July and 11.39 million in August.

That represents an increase of about 120,000 RSA members in four months.

The steady expansion in RSA membership, alongside the recovery in pension assets, points to continued growth in the pool of long-term retirement savings available to the Nigerian economy.

The August position also represents a substantial recovery from the N30.63 trillion recorded in April, putting pension assets about N1.17 trillion higher than their April level.
