TAU acquires virtual dissection table to aid medical learning

Thomas Adewumi University (TAU), Oko-Irese, Kwara State

In a major step toward improving medical education in the country, Thomas Adewumi University (TAU), Oko-Irese in Kwara State, has acquired a state-of-the-art virtual dissection table for its medical students.

TAU’s Vice Chancellor, Prof Fransisca Oladipo, disclosed that the university recently took delivery of the Asclepius TBK 84 EA Virtual Dissection Table, an 84-inch interactive 3D system designed to support the teaching of anatomy, radiology, and surgical procedures from the German 3B Scientific company for medical training solutions.

Fielding questions from newsmen, Oladipo said TAU now ranks among the existing few Nigerian institutions adopting virtual dissection technology, signaling a shift from traditional methods of teaching anatomy.

She said: “unlike the conventional use of cadavers, the digital table allows students to study the human body in life-size detail, exploring different layers and systems with ease.

“The development also enables the conversion of CT and MRI scans into 3D models, giving students a clearer understanding of complex medical conditions.

“Students can simulate surgical procedures, carry out virtual dissections, and engage in detailed studies of areas like: histopathology and endoscopy,” she said.

According to VC Prof Oladipo: “the platform also includes access to thousands of assessment questions to support learning and improve diagnostic skills.”

She stressed that the acquisition has become a significant milestone that will transform the learning experience and better prepare students for modern medical practice.

Stakeholders in the area expressed satisfaction that the new acquisition would place TAU among forward-thinking institutions investing in technology-driven training.

The university said the initiative reflects its commitment to delivering quality education and aligning its programmes with global standards.

With the new facility in place, TAU which is located in Kwara State is positioning itself as a growing centre for advanced medical training in Nigeria.
