As part of efforts to improve diabetes control in Nigeria, Beximco Pharmaceuticals in collaboration with Standard Genetics Nigeria Limited have launched new pharmaceutical products, which include glipita and glipita-M brands.

Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Standard Generics Nigeria limited, Ernest Udensi said his organization is fast growing pharmaceutical company whose overriding goal is to lead the way in a renewed effort for the provision of up to date and less risk medicaments for most common ailments to the teaming populace in this country and more especially at very affordable prices.

Udensi stressed that it is basically untreatable the country are yet to acquire the large scale scientific infrastructure, that is the facilities, resources and services that a research community uses to conduct research and promote innovation in the field of health science.

However, Udensi stated these things abound mostly in Europe and America and consequently most multinational pharmaceutical companies are based there and their efforts are usually rewarded with patent rights to solely market their inventions that are the developed drugs for a period of time during which the costs of those products are prohibitive to most third world countries. Things have gotten so bad in this country to the extent that even after the patient rights are expired, it takes still many years before these drugs become commonly available here.

Udensi said: “Irony we all confront in this country where despite the fact that Nigeria is a major exporting country, the major of its citizens are impoverished and with purchasing power remaining generally low, most people are unable to pay for medical care”.

“Secondly, the healthcare system is suffering a level of neglect in this country resulting in both inadequate funding and effective regulation, which allows infiltration of the sector by unscrupulous commercialism whose goal, is solely profit taking to the utter neglect of the well being of the citizenry.”

“Unlike in automotive, fashion and other industries where new innovations could be drive at times by fad, innovations in the health industry are driven strictly by both the need for greater safety and effectiveness of application.”

“Unfortunately, Nigerians hardly take advantage of innovations in the health industry with the result that today, a new field of endeavour is fast emerging known as medical tourism even as this country experts thousands of medical professionals abroad each year”.

“Taking cognizance of the above said, it is clearly understandable why we in standard generics limited have taken up this challenge to provide in this country, where possible, the latest available medicaments and more especially at a price affordable to many”.

Country Manager Beximico Pharmacy Tasfina Islam said her organization’s product portfolio number in their hundreds and manufacturing facilities have already been certified by the regulatory authorities of USA, Europe, Australia, Canada, Latin America and South Africa and also Nigeria.

She said: “This partnership promises to blossom to enviable heights and this launch today of glipita and glipita-M brands of Sitagliptin and Sitagliptin pulse metformin which will bring succour to millions of ailing diabetics patients in this country is only the beginning. We always count on your cooperation and support in this endeavour. Even now, we like to already thank you all in anticipation of this support”.
