154 Badagry patients undergo cataract surgeries in NNPC, Shell outreach

Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL)

‎At least 154 cataract surgeries were performed during a five-day medical outreach organised by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) and Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited (SNEPCo) in Badagry Local Government Area of Lagos State.

‎The surgeries were part of the latest edition of the Vision First initiative, which attended to 2,297 people, with 1,458 receiving eye-care services and 878 given prescription spectacles.

‎The outreach also recorded more than 200 general surgeries and provided cardiovascular screening, consultations and treatment for mild and chronic illnesses, laboratory and pharmaceutical services, as well as insecticide-treated nets.

‎On the first day of the exercise, 38 patients underwent surgeries that restored their sight.

‎Beneficiaries expressed appreciation to NNPC and SNEPCo, saying the restoration of their sight would help them regain independence and reintegrate into society.

SNEPCo Managing Director, Ronald Adams, said the company remained committed to initiatives that strengthen communities and create lasting impact.

‎“We believe that caring for people goes beyond business; it is a responsibility and a privilege. That is why we remain committed to supporting initiatives that strengthen communities and create lasting impact,” Adams said.

‎The Badagry outreach was the sixth edition of the Vision First initiative, which began in 2022.

‎The first edition held outside Lagos took place in Asaba, Delta State, late last year, where nearly 2,000 people received healthcare services.

‎The programme is delivered in collaboration with Kolmarg Eyesight Foundation, a Jos-based non-governmental organisation focused on providing comprehensive eye care to underserved communities in sub-Saharan Africa.
