NHIS plans expanded coverage of Nigerians by 2030

National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has assured Nigerians it would deploy technology to drive key initiatives, aimed at ensuring a systematic expanded coverage of the vulnerable and non-vulnerable populations of the informal sector, as well as the public and private sectors by 2030.

General Manager, NHIS Zonal Office Department, Hajia Asmau Mohammed, said this at an interactive stakeholders’ forum, recently organised by the corporation in Yaba, Lagos.

She explained that there was an urgent need to cover indigent Nigerians across the country, with the sole purpose of delivering a comprehensive and affordable healthcare service to them.

Towards this end, she said the scheme has adopted a 10-year strategic plan to accelerate the drive towards achieving Universal Health Coverage for all Nigerians.

Noting that participants at the programme included representatives of Health Maintenance Organisations (HMO), with accredited healthcare providers and a cross-section of enrollees from several ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs), she said the event provided a platform to discuss critical aspects of health service delivery, including quality management and measures to ensure stakeholder satisfaction, as well as engender transparency and accountability through stakeholder involvement in decision-making.

Highlighting a new initiative of the scheme, the General Manager, Formal Sector Department, Dr. Jonathan Ndubuisi Eke, explained that the group, individual, family social health insurance programme (GIFSHIP) was designed to provide health coverage and financial risk protection for families, groups and individuals not covered under any of the existing programmes.

He said the enrollment process is seamless, while the coverage is the same as applies to the public and organised private sector enrollees.

Addressing enrollees’ concerns about the poor quality of service at primary care provider, Pharmacist Femi Adeoye, Head of Accreditation division, advised that they visit the State Office to exercise their rights as NHIS enrollees and request a change.

Ms. Catherine Tanzamado, Coordinator of the State Office, Yaba, Lagos, expressed confidence in the repositioning agenda of NHIS management, which will create greater synergy among stakeholders and promote quality service delivery.
