
South East and South South geo-political zones have recorded the highest intercity fares within the last seven months. Data monitored by The Guardian in its transport fare watch of the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS) for seven months up till the July edition released recently revealed.

For July, on state profile analysis, for intercity bus travel (state route charged per person fare), the highest fare was recorded in Anambra with N9,566.89, followed by Gombe with N8,299.44. The lowest fare was recorded in Kwara with N5,518.38, followed by Ebonyi with N5,596.11. Taraba State recorded the highest bus journey within the city (per drop constant route) in July 2024 with N1,457.28 followed by Ondo with N1,200.94. On the other hand, Adamawa recorded the least with N500.00, followed by Abia with N505.35.
For June, there was no data recorded for intercity fares by regions but the average fare paid by commuters for bus intercity journeys per drop was N7,029.23 in June 2024, indicating a decline of 0.52 per cent on a month-on-month basis compared to N7,129.46 in May 2024. On a year-on-year basis, the fare rose by 24.72 per cent from N5,686.49 in June 2023. In air travel, the average fare paid by air passengers for specified routes for a single journey was N89,886.84 in June 2024, showing an increase of 0.51 per cent compared to the previous month (May 2024). On a year-on-year basis, the fare rose by 14.18 per cent from N78,721.62 in June 2023.
Also, for May, there was no data recorded for regions on transport fare watch for intercity fare travels, but the average transport fare paid on motorcycle transportation for May was N473.51 in May 2024 which shows a decline of 0.62 per cent when compared with the value recorded in April 2024 (N476.49). On a year-on-year basis, the fare increased by 2.45 per cent when compared with May 2023 (N462.18). For water transport (waterway passenger transportation), the average fare paid in May 2024 was N1, 385.95 which remains the same when compared to the previous month (April 2024). On a year-on-year basis, it increased by 32.61 per cent from N1, 045.15 in May 2023.

Besides, for April, there was no data recorded for the region but the average transport fare paid on Okada transportation was N476.49 in April 2024, which increased by 0.92 per cent when compared with the value recorded in March 2024 (N472.16). On a year-on-year basis, the fare increased by 3.07 per cent when compared with April 2023 (N462.29). For water transport (waterway passenger transportation), the average fare paid in April 2024 increased to N1, 385.95 from N1, 384.32 which indicates an increase of 0.12 per cent monthly. On a year-on-year basis, it increased by 34.45 per cent from N1,030.83 in April 2023.
For March, on state profile analysis, for intercity bus travel (state route charged per person fare), the highest fare was recorded in Anambra with N9,700, followed by Akwa-Ibom with N9,000.00. The lowest fare was recorded in Kwara with N5,500, followed by Ebonyi with N5,700. Taraba state recorded the highest bus journey within the city (per drop constant route) in March 2024 with N1, 450.00 followed by Ondo with N1, 200.00. On the other hand, Abia recorded the least with N520.00, followed by Adamawa with N580.00. Similarly, Rivers recorded the highest air transport charges (for specified routes single journeys) with N100,000, followed by Kano with N96,000.
In February, on state profile analysis, for intercity bus travel (state route charged per person fare), the highest fare was recorded in Akwa-Ibom and Anambra with N9,000, followed by Abuja with N8,050. The lowest fare was recorded in Kwara with N5,000, followed by Ebonyi with N5,700. Taraba state recorded the highest bus journey within the city (per drop constant route) in February 2024 with N1,400 followed by Ondo with N1,200.
On the other hand, Abia recorded the least with N500.00, followed by Adamawa with N585.00. Similarly, Rivers recorded the highest air transport charges (for specified routes single journeys) with N100,000, followed by Kano with N96,000.
