Your vagina keeps itself perfectly clean. Thanks to the vaginal microbiome, an ecosystem of microorganisms that includes the helpful bacteria, lactobacillus, the vagina is slightly acidic. This quality discourages harmful bacteria and other potential infections from taking root according to public goods.

The new trend of using scented pads in order to avoid the foul smell of menstruation blood is very harmful. This has been also seen as unhealthy by health practitioners. Below are some of the health repercussions of using scented pads.

They are counterproductive
It is healthier to change your pad every four to six hours regardless of how heavy or light your period flow is instead of using a scented pad in order to avoid the odour. When your menstrual blood mixes with chemical perfumes on sanitary pads, it can lead to foul smell. So, instead of masking the odour, it can worsen it.

Harmful artificial fragrance
Often, the scent comes with a heavy dose of chemicals on the sanitary napkin, which can have more serious health consequences than you could imagine. These chemicals can cause organ damage and the hydrocarbons might even be carcinogenic.

Kill good bacteria
When you put scented things in your vagina, you kill the good bacteria that’s in there and then the bad bacteria overgrow. These tampons can cause bacterial vaginosis, so your vagina can actually smell like fish. This product that’s supposedly designed to make you smell better can actually give you an infection and do exactly the opposite of what it’s intended to do.

The vagina is a pretty incredible organism. Lined with what’s called an epithelium, the tissue that protects internal organs, the vagina produces a layer of mucus. This constant flow of mucus, which you eventually see in your underwear in the form of discharge, helps lubricate the vagina for sex and childbirth, but it also serves a more fundamental purpose by guarding the vagina against external threats.

Chemical additives like fragrances can irritate or even erode this barrier, harming your vagina’s natural defenses.
