7 products to avoid using with Vitamin C serum
Vitamin C serum is a super beauty product in skincare industry. It has the ability to brighten complexions, reduce hyperpigmentation, and promote collagen production. However, to maximise its benefits and prevent potential skin irritation, it’s crucial to be mindful of the products you combine with it. ITORO OLADOKUN, a professional makeup artist at Vickemm Beauty Plus, has curated products and ingredients to avoid when using vitamin C serum. Take a look:
1. Retinol
Retinol, a derivative of vitamin A, is celebrated for its anti-aging properties. However, combining retinol with vitamin C isn’t advisable. Vitamin C is most effective at a pH around 3, while retinol works best at a pH of 5 to 5.5. Using them together can compromise their stability and effectiveness, potentially leading to skin irritation.
2. Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) and Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs)
AHAs (like glycolic and lactic acids) and BHAs (like salicylic acid) are exfoliants that help in removing dead skin cells. However, layering these acids with vitamin C can alter its pH balance, reducing its efficacy and increasing the risk of skin irritation.
3. Benzoyl Peroxide
Commonly used in acne treatments, benzoyl peroxide is a potent ingredient. When used alongside vitamin C, it can oxidize the vitamin, diminishing its antioxidant properties and effectiveness. With this, both products will not work effectively as it should.
4. Niacinamide
Niacinamide (vitamin B3) is known for its anti-inflammatory and skin-soothing benefits. However, when combined with vitamin C, especially in its pure form (ascorbic acid), they can neutralise each other’s effects, rendering both less effective.

5. Sunscreen
While it’s essential to use sunscreen during the day, especially when using vitamin C, applying them simultaneously can be counterproductive. Some chemical sunscreens can interact with vitamin C, leading to the formation of compounds that may cause skin damage. It’s recommended to allow vitamin C serum to fully absorb before applying sunscreen.
6. Ferrous or Ferric Oxide
Ingredients like ferrous or ferric oxide, often found in certain BB creams, can react with vitamin C to form compounds that might be harmful to the skin. It’s best to avoid using products containing these oxides in conjunction with vitamin C serum.
7. Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic acid is a hydrating ingredient that operates optimally at a pH of 5 and above, whereas vitamin C requires a pH of around 3. Using them together can compromise the effectiveness of both. It’s advisable to use them at different times of the day or on alternate days.
Practices that work instead
Layering
If you wish to add both vitamin C and other active ingredients like retinol or acids into your routine, consider using vitamin C in the morning and the other actives at night.
Patch testing
Before introducing new combinations, perform a patch test to ensure your skin doesn’t react adversely to it. You can do that on areas that is not noticeable on your skin.
Consultation
If uncertain, consult with a dermatologist to tailor a skincare regimen suited to your skin type and concerns.
So just like when taking antibiotics, you’d be advised to stare clear of Vitamin C till the completion of medication, same applies for Vit. C and other beauty products or best still, do not use them at the same time.
