Coco Gauff Makes History, Wins US Open to Become Youngest American Grand Slam Champion Since Serena Williams
Flushing Meadows. Coco Gauff made history on Saturday, defeating Aryna Sabalenka 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 to win the US Open and become the youngest American Grand Slam champion since Serena Williams in 1999.
The 19-year-old Gauff, who was born in Atlanta, Georgia, is the first American teenager to win the US Open since Williams won her first title at the age of 17 in 1999. She is also the youngest player to win a Grand Slam singles title since Maria Sharapova won Wimbledon in 2004.
Gauff’s victory is a remarkable achievement for a player who only turned professional in 2018. She has already established herself as one of the best players in the world, and she is sure to be a major force in the years to come.
In the final, Gauff faced a tough opponent in Sabalenka, the world No. 4. Sabalenka won the first set in convincing fashion, but Gauff showed her fighting spirit to come back and win the match. After the match, Gauff said that she was “overwhelmed” and “didn’t know what to say.” She also thanked her family, friends, and coaches for their support.
