EastEnders, a long-running British soap opera created by Julia Smith and Tony Holland, which has been broadcast in the UK since 1985 is set to premiere on DStv Channel 120. The new soap will hit the screen from Monday, June 19, on weeknights at 5:30pm local time, enabling it to reach a wider audience on DStv Premium, Compact +, Compact in Africa.

Set in the East End of London in the fictional Borough of Walford, the soap follows the stories of local residents and their families as they go about their daily lives in Albert Square, tackling many dilemmas that are considered to be controversial and taboo issues in British culture and social life previously unseen on United Kingdom mainstream television.

Head of Programming Africa, BBC Worldwide, Kully Kaur-Bains said, “We know our African audiences have an insatiable appetite for entertaining British soaps. We are very excited to introduce the scandals, romances and family dramas of EastEnders to even more DStv viewers on BBC Brit.”

According Kaur-Bains, viewers can look forward to the return of familiar face Robbie Jackson (Dean Gaffney) and introduction of new characters including bad lad ‘Woody’ Woodward (Lee Ryan), business woman Fi Browning (Lisa Faulkner) and a brand new family, The Taylors, who are set to cause big trouble on The Square.

Kaur-Bains explained BBC Brit will still host the popular series such as Top Gear and The Graham Norton Show, but will now also be the exclusive home to popular entertainment programming such as Strictly Come Dancing and new drama and comedy series including Michael McIntyre’s Big Show.

He noted the new soap has won a variety of awards including nine British Academy Television Awards, four Royal Television Society Programme Awards, and 84 British Soap Awards.
