Rising Afrobeats artist Olamilekan Ajibade, known by his stage name Magek Boi, is using his music to shed light on the economic struggles facing many Nigerian families. His hit song Poor Man Pikin captures the reality of hardship in the country, offering a poignant reflection on the daily battle to survive.

Magek Boi is more than just a musician—he embodies both the dreams and challenges of everyday Nigerians. Though his primary genre is Afrobeats, his musical versatility has allowed him to move seamlessly across various styles. Born into a family of seven in Iresi, Boluwaduro Local Government of Osun State, Magek Boi’s upbringing was far from easy. With his father a hunter and his late mother a teacher, his formative years were marked by struggle, but his determination to succeed set him on a different path.

Magek Boi’s early life, education at Federal Polytechnic Offa in Kwara State, and the eventual beginning of his music career in 2017 with Spiritual Assignment, all feed into the narrative of a man deeply connected to his roots. His experiences have become the foundation of his artistic expression.

In Poor Man Pikin, Magek Boi reflects on his own life while also giving voice to the countless Nigerians battling poverty. “The inspiration for Poor Man Pikin came from God and from looking around at my community,” he shared. “There are so many families who can’t afford three square meals. Poverty is a menace in our homes. Even those who have defeated poverty, like Obi Cubana, come from humble beginnings. I had to sing about it because it’s my story too.”

The track’s raw emotion and relatable lyrics have resonated with listeners across the country, drawing attention to the widening economic gap. Magek Boi doesn’t shy away from acknowledging the difficulties that persist in Nigeria but aims to inspire those facing similar struggles to hold on to hope.

Reflecting on his rise in the industry, Magek Boi recalled moments when he felt as if his path was lonely and uncertain. Yet, he cites Real Warri Pikin as a key figure who believed in him and provided immense support. “Real Warri Pikin is genuine and passionate about helping people,” he said. “She has done so much for me—financially, physically, and spiritually. She even prayed with me after our first shoot. She’s the kind of person society needs.”

As Poor Man Pikin continues to dominate the airwaves, Magek Boi remains optimistic about his future. Having recently performed at the 2024 International Youth Day celebration in Osun State, he hinted at more hits on the horizon. “I feel elated and motivated to do more,” he said. “I’ve got more songs ready to go, and I owe a big shout-out to my producer Yungprobeatz for making it possible.”

Magek Boi’s journey from a struggling youth to a rising star is a testament to his resilience and unwavering commitment to his craft. As he continues to evolve, his music promises to remain a reflection of the challenges and triumphs that define the Nigerian experience.
