December 2024 is shaping up to be a thrilling month for Nollywood fans, as cinemas prepare to showcase some of the most anticipated films of the year.

The trend of December blockbuster releases gained momentum in 2016 when The Wedding Party hit the screens and held the title of the highest-grossing Nigerian film for four years. Its reign was eventually toppled by Funke Akindele’s Omo Ghetto: The Saga in 2020, but its legacy of star-studded December movies endures.

Now, it’s almost a tradition for Nigerians to look forward to the end of the year with high expectations for major cinematic releases. December has become a prime time for filmmakers to dazzle audiences with top-tier productions.

In true Nollywood style, producers have flooded social media with teasers and promotional campaigns, leaving no doubt that this December will be packed with excitement.

1. Everybody Loves Jenifa (Release Date: December 13, 2024)

The hilarious and heartwarming Jenifa franchise is back, helmed by Funke Akindele, also known as ‘Jenifa,’ the character that has endeared her to millions. Directed by Akindele and Tunde Olaoye, this sequel brings back fan favourites like Falz, Juliana Olayode, and Tobi Makinde, alongside stars like Patience Ozokwor and Nancy Isime. From its 2008 debut to its hit TV series, Jenifa’s Diary, this franchise remains a cultural phenomenon in Nigeria.

2. Seven Doors (Release Date: December 13, 2024)

Femi Adebayo takes the director’s chair in Seven Doors, his first historical drama. Set in 18th and 19th-century Nigeria, the film explores themes of love, betrayal, and the clash between tradition and change. Starring Adebayo himself as a Yoruba king alongside Chioma Akpotha as his Igbo queen, the film portrays the turmoil caused by a Hausa investor whose ambitions disrupt their kingdom’s traditions.

3. Suspicion (Release Date: November 28, 2024)

Tosin Igho’s thriller, Suspicion, takes a deep dive into the haunting realities faced by victims of ritual practices. Building on the narrative of his 2008 short film, The Suspicious Guy, this action-packed feature stars an ensemble cast, including Stan Nze, Omowunmi Dada, and Kalu Ikeagwu. Expect suspense, chills, and gripping drama in this highly anticipated project.

4. Thin Line (Release Date: December 2024)

Get ready for a drama-filled December with Thin Line, starring Iyabo Ojo, The Cute Abiola, Yvonne Jegede, and a host of Nollywood favourites. This film is packed with intrigue, drama, and complex relationships, promising to keep audiences glued to the screen.

5. Christmas in Lagos (Release Date: December 20, 2024)

Jade Osiberu serves up a holiday romance in Christmas in Lagos, set against the lively backdrop of Lagos’ famous Detty December. With intertwined storylines featuring characters like Fiyin (Teniola Aladese) navigating love triangles and Gbemi (Shaffy Bello) caught between two suitors, the film is a cocktail of drama, romance, and Lagos vibes.

6. Alakada: Bad and Boujee (Release Date: December 2024)

Toyin Abraham is back with the fifth installment of the Alakada series, continuing the hilarious escapades of Yetunde, a character beloved for her outrageous lies and attempts to climb the social ladder. Packed with humour and relatability, this comedy is sure to be a festive favourite.

7. The Waiter (Release Date: December 2024)

Directed by Toka McBaror and produced by Ayo Makun (popularly known as AY), The Waiter promises big laughs and gripping performances. With a stellar cast including Regina Daniels, Deyemi Okanlawon, and Brain Jotter, this film is one to watch. While the plot remains under wraps, the talent involved is enough to spark excitement.
