Simple guide on cleaning drainages
Drainages can be the silent culprits behind unpleasant odours, backyard floods, and even the dreaded mosquito infestation.
Whether it’s a minor clog or a full-blown drainage crisis, learning to clean your drainage efficiently can save you time, keep your home clean, and protect you from health risks. Follow these straightforward steps to restore flow, avoid floods, and maintain a drainage system that works with you, not against you!
1. Gather your tools
Before you begin, equip yourself with the right tools. Here’s what you’ll need: Gloves (rubber or work gloves), drain cleaning brush or wire hanger, Bucket for any waste or excess water. You also need bleach or drain-cleaning solution, a garden hose or pressure washer (optional but effective).

2. Clear out visible debris
Start by clearing any visible debris from around the drain opening. Leaves, twigs, and other litter can easily block drains and create backups. Use gloved hands or a garden rake to remove this loose debris, which can then be disposed of in a trash bag. Removing visible blockages from drainages can prevent water from backing up and reduces unpleasant smells.
3. Check for blockages inside the drain
Once you’ve cleared the outside, use a drain brush or an unbent wire hanger to reach further into the drain and remove built-up dirt, sludge, or waste. Gently push the tool down into the drain, twisting and turning to pick up grime. Be patient—this part can be a little tough but is essential for clearing stubborn blockages.
4. Flush with hot water
After removing as much physical blockage as you can, it’s time to flush the drain. Boil a kettle of water and pour it directly into the drain to dissolve any remaining grease or soap residue. Hot water not only clears drainages but also kills any lingering bacteria or mould growing in damp conditions.
5. Use a cleaning solution for tough spots
For drains with a serious build-up, a cleaning solution can do wonders. Mix one cup of baking soda with a half-cup of vinegar for a natural cleaner that breaks down grime while being eco-friendly. Pour the solution down the drain and wait for about 10-15 minutes; you’ll notice some fizzing as it dissolves the sludge. Finally, rinse with hot water to ensure all residues are gone. If it’s still clogged, use a commercial drain cleaner following the manufacturer’s instructions.
6. Flush with a garden hose or pressure washer
For outdoor drains or large clogs, use a garden hose or pressure washer to give your drainage a high-pressure flush. Insert the nozzle into the drain and turn it on at full pressure to clear out leftover debris and refresh the entire system. This step is perfect for an extra-deep clean and is especially useful during rainy seasons to prevent future blockages.
