Founded in 2019 by Abdul-Qadir A. Abdul-Razaq, Qadir & Co. has positioned itself as a Nigerian label merging traditional craft with modern dressmaking. Every piece is carefully planned, cut, and sewn in collaboration with local artisans, with a clear ethos: clothing as transformation, not just coverage.
The 2023 Chic Wear Collection continues that vision, offering pieces that lean into structure, modern detailing, and individuality. But while the intent is strong, some designs reveal the gap between concept and execution.
Look 1: Blue two-piece
This sheath ensemble pairs a long-sleeved top with a matching maxi skirt in blue with white accents. The fit is controlled: close enough to outline the body yet relaxed enough to allow movement. Shoulders are balanced, the neckline dips into a sweetheart with a small plunge, and the sleeves run neat to the wrist.
A peplum waist with a midriff cut-out adds a modern edge, while the skirt flows evenly to the knees before finishing with a rear slit for ease. The harmony between top and skirt is deliberate, creating a smart blend of official and occasional wear.
Still, the cut-out reads oversized against such a fitted shape, and the hem runs long, making it best suited for heels. A tighter edit could elevate it from well-made to versatile.
Look 2: Black and brown contrast
Here, the brand experiments with a two-piece: a black cold-shoulder top in textured sweater fabric paired with a light brown mermaid skirt. The top is slim through the arms, with cotton appliqué details and a close crew neck. The skirt balances the fitted waist with a dramatic ruffled peplum and flares into a voluminous hem.
The silhouette is expressive, unusual, and memorable. Stitching is clean, seams are consistent, and the skirt fabric feels elevated. The look has presence and could easily command attention at a formal event.
But the sweater material in the top undermines the polish. It feels casual against the glamour of the skirt, creating a mismatch that weakens the overall impact. The intent is strong, but the fabric choice makes it less cohesive.
Look 3: Striped one-shoulder mermaid
This one-piece design leans on asymmetry, built in blue and white stripes. A single strap runs over the right shoulder, balanced by a ruched short sleeve on the other side. The bodice is fitted, ruched through the waist, and extends into a mermaid flare with a ruffled hem.
It’s original in concept and visually striking, especially with its alternating stripes. The fit outlines the frame cleanly, and the flared hem brings movement.
Where it falters is in proportion. The ruching around the midriff is overworked, and the sleeve feels unnecessarily fussy. Together, they disrupt the clean lines that could have made this dress a standout.
The verdict
The 2023 Chic Wear Collection is ambitious and rooted in craft, reflecting Qadir & Co.’s thoughtful process and intention. At its best, the work shows harmony between modern tailoring and cultural awareness. At weaker points, over-designed details or mismatched fabrics compromise the vision.
What’s clear is that Qadir & Co. is not chasing trends but carving an identity. With sharper edits, these pieces could move from intriguing to iconic.
