Nigerian singer and songwriter, Tiwatope Omolara Savage, popularly known as Tiwa Savage, has said the death of her father and the release of her sex tape marked the lowest point in her career.
She made this known during a talk show posted on YouTube on Thursday, where she reflected on her personal struggles and emotional challenges.
When asked about the darkest moment in her career, the singer said, “My dad died and my sex tape was released. The only way I could have survived was not to think about it.”
She added that taking part in the interview meant a lot to her, especially after dealing with different personal issues over the years.
“Being here on the couch with you is such a blessing. Just the fact that you even want to talk to me—people want to hear what I want to say after how many years—it just feels good. I’ve gone through so much, but have I really enjoyed the moment?” she said.
Speaking further in the interview with British media personality, Zeze Mills, the award-winning singer said she has never experienced true love despite her age and past relationships.
“I don’t think I’ve experienced true love apart from my son. Because every time I look back at all my relationships, I’m like, nah, that wasn’t love. I was just infatuated. At that time I thought I was in love. I don’t think I experienced true love even when I was married,” she said.
The Somebody’s Son crooner explained that she had made several efforts to find genuine love, but each time ended in disappointment.
“Maybe love isn’t for me because I have tried over and over again so maybe love isn’t for me this lifetime,” she said.
Savage was previously married to her former manager, Tunji Balogun, popularly known as Teebillz. The pair got married in 2013 and later divorced in 2018. Their union produced a son, Jamil.
Tiwa Savage is regarded as one of Africa’s leading female artistes, with hit songs such as Koroba, All Over, and Loaded to her name.
