2023 polls: NBC cautions broadcasters against inciting campaigns
The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), yesterday, cautioned broadcast stations from availing their platforms to political campaigns capable of instigating violence and disunity in the country.
Besides, the commission vowed to sanction any broadcaster, who circumvents the code of conduct, Electoral Act and other extant laws while airing the 2023 political campaigns.
NBC Director General, Balarabe Shehu Ilelah, gave the warning in Kano at the opening of nationwide sensitisation forum on political broadcasting ahead of next year’s general elections.
He cautioned that broadcasters are not statutorily empowered to announce or declare election prior to declaration of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The DG equally reminded broadcasters from the North West and North East on the statutory responsibility of NBC to ensure safe and peace ecosystem before and during elections, insisting that practitioners must act responsibly.
On political campaign, the Ilelah stressed that broadcasters must ensure equal allocation of airtime during their peak period for jingles and programmes.
