• Odii raises alarm over alleged threat to running mate’s life in Ebonyi

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) yesterday alleged that opposition parties in Enugu State had been subjected to attacks and acts of political violence, blaming the state government for the incidents.

The group disclosed this in a statement by the Head of the Fourth Administration of IPOB’s Directorate of State (DOS), Mazi Chris Nwaogu.

Nwaoguụ alleged that political gatherings organised by opposition groups in Enugu State had been disrupted by suspected thugs, particularly in Nkanu West, resulting in injuries and destruction of property.

The Enugu State Government has not reacted to the accusation, which has been trending, especially on social media, with many accusing the government of stifling opposition groups in the state.

Videos and commentaries on social media showed opposition groups from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which Governor Peter Mbah was a member of and which was the platform he won his election on, and the Nigeria Democratic Party (NDC) being attacked by thugs allegedly sponsored by officials of the Enugu State Government.

Nwaoguụ further claimed that the police had confirmed the attacks, while alleging that the All Progressives Congress (APC) had denied responsibility.

IPOB described the alleged attacks as unacceptable and warned against associating the group with political violence.

MEANWHILE, the NDC governorship candidate in Delta State for the 2027 general elections, Chris Iyovwaye, has condemned the disruption of the party’s campaign in Effurun.

He said that the issue would be probed and alleged that the police were ordered out of the campaign location.

Iyovwaye made this known yesterday during an interview on Channels Television’s breakfast show, The Morning Brief, saying the authorities needed to rise to the occasion to ensure that this doesn’t happen repeatedly in the democratic process.

He said: “It was supposed to be a peaceful process, and we had people who were seemingly sponsored by the APC to stop it,” he alleged. “It was obvious, and there was another Collins who came and was caught with an AK-47. These are deliberate acts by people who want to stop the process, and it is very dangerous for our community.

“We are really asking that the authorities will rise so that we can stop this kind of thing from happening again. It happened to the former Senator Ovie Omo-Agege and me. It was a bloodshed.”

ALSO, the PDP governorship candidate in Ebonyi State, Dr Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, has raised the alarm over an alleged plot to attack his running mate, Patrick Mgbebu, ahead of the February 8, 2027, governorship election.

Odii, through his spokesman, Emmanuel Igwe, alerted security agencies of the alleged plot and urged them to investigate the claims and ensure Mgbebu’s safety, as well as members of the campaign council and supporters.

Mgbebu, a former member of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly and immediate past representative of the state on the Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Allocation Commission (RMAFC), was selected as Odii’s running mate about two weeks ago following recommendations by PDP stakeholders in the state.
