The leadership of the Labour Party(LP) on Tuesday reaffirmed its confidence in its 2027 presidential ticket, declaring that the choice of Hajja Bintu Konto as the party’s vice presidential candidate reflects its commitment to equity, inclusion and people-centred governance.

The assurance came during an interactive session between the party’s National Working Committee and Konto at the Labour Party National Secretariat in Abuja.

Speaking at the meeting, the party’s National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, described Konto’s emergence as a demonstration of the Labour Party’s philosophy of inclusiveness, saying the party remains committed to providing equal opportunities for women in leadership.

Usman noted that the Labour Party is the only major political party in the 2027 presidential race to nominate a woman as its vice presidential candidate, adding that the decision underscores its commitment to social justice and gender inclusion.

She expressed confidence that Konto’s professional background and humanitarian experience would complement the leadership of the party’s presidential candidate, Dr. Chibuzo Sunday Okereke, if elected in 2027.

The Labour Party chairman also commended Abia State Governor Alex Otti, describing him as a model of the party’s governance philosophy.

According to her, the recently enacted social welfare law for senior citizens in Abia State demonstrates the Labour Party’s commitment to people-oriented governance and should serve as an example for other states.

Usman urged Nigerians to support the party in future elections, arguing that developments in Abia State illustrate what Labour Party administrations can deliver.

Also speaking, the party’s presidential candidate, Dr. Chibuzo Sunday Okereke, said he was pleased to have Konto as his running mate, describing her as experienced, dependable and committed to national development.

He said the inclusion of women in governance was essential to nation-building, noting that no government could succeed while sidelining a significant segment of the population.

Okereke praised Konto’s humanitarian interventions, particularly her work in communities affected by the Boko Haram insurgency, saying her experience would strengthen efforts to tackle insecurity and promote inclusive development.

He also commended Senator Usman for her leadership and role in the emergence of the vice presidential candidate.

In her remarks, Hajja Konto thanked the party leadership for the confidence reposed in her and pledged to serve Nigerians diligently if elected.

She recalled her humanitarian work in northern Nigeria during the height of the Boko Haram insurgency, saying she remained committed to supporting affected communities despite losing her husband to the conflict.

According to her, the experiences gained from years of humanitarian service would guide her contributions to addressing Nigeria’s security and development challenges.

Konto said she joined the Labour Party because she believes it offers a credible platform with practical solutions to Nigeria’s governance challenges.

The meeting ended with the party leadership expressing confidence that the Okereke-Konto ticket would offer Nigerians what it described as competent, compassionate and transformational leadership in the 2027 general election.
