2027: SWAGA Moves to consolidate Tinubu’s South-West support base

President Bola Tinubu

The South West Agenda for Asiwaju (SWAGA) have concluded arrangments to begin a fresh grassroots mobilisation campaign to consolidate support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid ahead of the 2027 general election.

The campaign, tagged SWAGA 2.0, will commence with a summit at the Blue Roof, Agidingbi, Ikeja, Lagos, in a forthnight featuring prominent chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other resource persons.

The group will also mobilise support for the APC governorship candidate in Lagos State, Dr Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat, as well as party candidates contesting seats in the National and state Houses of Assembly across the South-West.

SWAGA comprises former federal and state lawmakers and prominent APC chieftains across the region. It was among the early political platforms to champion Tinubu’s presidential ambition ahead of the 2023 general election.

The decision to launch the new mobilisation drive followed a strategy meeting held in Lagos on Monday, presided over by the Lagos State Chairman of SWAGA, Hon. Monsuru Owolabi, a four-term member of the House of Representatives.

The meeting was attended by the group’s National Secretary, Hon. Bosun Oladele, and its Convener, Hon. Oladimeji Oyetunji Ojo, a former member of the House of Representatives and Managing Director of the Federal Housing Authority.

The initiative is also being championed by Senator Dayo Adeyeye, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Nigerian Ports Authority.

In a statement issued in Lagos on Tuesday, the Director of Media and Publicity, Hon. Lanre Odubote, said the state chapter had concluded arrangements to commence activities aimed at securing support for Tinubu’s re-election and Hamzat’s governorship ambition.

Odubote, a former representative of Epe Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives during the Seventh Assembly, said the Lagos chapter, under Owolabi’s leadership, had put the necessary structures in place for the mobilisation exercise.

He described SWAGA 2.0 as a renewed effort to rally party members and supporters behind Tinubu, drawing on the group’s previous mobilisation campaign ahead of the 2023 presidential election.

“I am happy to inform you that SWAGA is back again, and what we are doing this time is SWAGA 2.0, put together to ensure the return of our amiable leader, who is putting the country back to shape,” Odubote said.

“We are working day and night to bring our members together to shore up the needed support for President Tinubu, just as we did the last time. We did it before, and we want to do it again.”

He said the November 13 summit would feature prominent APC members as speakers and resource persons to provide strategic direction for the campaign.

Among those expected to speak are former APC National Legal Adviser, Dr Muiz Banire; Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Dr Kayode Opeifa; and Professor Yemi Oke of the Faculty of Law, University of Lagos.

Odubote said the group intended to draw on the experience and expertise of party insiders to strengthen its mobilisation strategy.

“We are going to bring in-house resource persons within the party to speak on different aspects of our campaign efforts. I mean the likes of Dr Muiz Banire and Dr Kayode Opeifa to spur us on the way forward,” he said.
He added that SWAGA would leverage Owolabi’s experience as a four-term member of the House of Representatives and his grassroots political network to drive the mobilisation exercise.

The group said the initiative would focus on consolidating support for Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, Hamzat’s governorship bid in Lagos and APC candidates seeking legislative seats across the South-WesBase
