81 per cent of Nigerians evade tax, says NESG

More than 81 per cent of taxable adults and businesses in Nigeria do not pay their income taxes, the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) has disclosed.

The revelation was contained in a presentation to the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) by the Research Director of the group’s Fiscal Policy Roundtable (FPR), Mr. Tayo Oyedele, during a courtesy call on the Director-General of the NGF, Mr. Asishana Bayo Okauru, yesterday in Abuja.

Accompanied by chairman of the FPR, Dr. Sarah Alade, Oyedele was seeking the involvement of the governors to remedy the problem for the nation to maximise its collectible revenues.

Deploring the apathy, he said available statistics indicate that only 20 million of Nigeria’s 200 million population pay tax.
