The Taraba State Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) State Project Implementation Unit (SPIU) has expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of work on the ongoing Ndibam Gully Erosion Control Project in Takum local government council, following an inspection aimed at assessing compliance with approved engineering standards and implementation timelines.

The inspection, undertaken in line with the directive of the project’s Task Team Leader (TTL), formed part of ACReSAL’s routine monitoring activities designed to ensure that intervention projects are delivered in accordance with technical specifications while achieving their intended environmental and socio-economic objectives.

The assessment was conducted before the project team departed Takum for Jalingo. During the visit, officials evaluated the progress of construction works, examined the quality of execution, and identified any issues requiring prompt attention to ensure the project remains on schedule.

According to the inspection team, work on the erosion control project is progressing satisfactorily, with the contractor fully mobilised and construction activities advancing in line with the approved work plan.

The team observed that critical aspects of the project—including earthworks, drainage infrastructure and foundation construction—were at various stages of completion and conformed to approved engineering specifications.

The availability of construction materials, heavy equipment and other operational resources on site was also said to demonstrate the contractor’s capacity to maintain the current pace of implementation.

Inspectors further reported satisfactory compliance with environmental safeguards and site management practices, noting that appropriate measures have been put in place to minimise environmental impacts during construction. They described the project’s adherence to sustainable construction standards as an important component of ACReSAL’s climate resilience agenda.

The Ndibam Gully Erosion Control Project is one of several interventions being implemented under the ACReSAL programme to combat land degradation, reduce the risks posed by gully erosion and strengthen the resilience of communities vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Such projects are expected to improve environmental sustainability while protecting public infrastructure, farmlands and residential areas threatened by erosion.

Residents of the host community who spoke with The Guardian, welcomed the intervention, describing it as a long-awaited response to the severe erosion challenges that have affected lives, livelihoods and infrastructure in the area for years.

 They commended the Taraba State Government and the ACReSAL Project for prioritising the community and pledged continued cooperation to ensure the successful completion and long-term sustainability of the project.

By maintaining regular oversight of ongoing projects, the programme aims to ensure that investments translate into durable infrastructure capable of mitigating environmental risks and improving the resilience of communities across the state.
