Adamawa CAN, SDP Governorship candidate at war over endorsement
The Adamawa State governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) Mr. Emmanuel Bello is at war with the state chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) over endorsement of his candidature.
Bello at the weekend held a close door meeting with some officials of the state’s CAN without the chairman, Bishop of Catholic Diocese of Yola, Bishop Stephen Dami Mamza in attendance.
The meeting, which turned into a shouting match between CAN and Bello ended without reaching an agreement.
While narrating what happened at the meeting, the state’s CAN Treasurer, Mr. Emmanuel Elisha, said trouble started when the SDP candidate demanded that the association should endorse him and the members promptly turned down his request.
He said they told Bello the association cannot endorse a single candidate, pointing out that all members have the right to vote candidates of their choice.
The treasurer said the association will not be intimidated or cajoled by any candidate.
He denied allegations that they collected N2.5m from Bello, saying that no amount of blackmail will compel the association to endorse any candidate.
Efforts to get Bello to state his side of the story were not successful as his phone was switch off.
