Address Ogoni cleanup, MOSOP urges Buhari
Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to pay serious attention to the cleanup of Ogoni and settle it before leaving office in 2023.
The group also said it was the responsibility of the Nigerian leadership to help them recover from long years of neglect, state repression and discrimination and find a lasting solution to the protracted problem in the area.
Its President, Fegalo Nsuke, in a statement, yesterday, said: “For the Federal Government to address the Ogoni predicament would be President Buhari’s most celebrated achievement by lifting the area out of its present state.”
“We expect the government to look into the issues before the expiration of the tenure. This will make Mr. President our all-time hero. Let him know that Ogoni is dying gradually and it will be sad for him not to act before leaving,” Nsuke added. He, therefore, expressed optimism that the Buhari-led administration would act immediately.
“The Nigerian Government has learnt their lessons on Ogoni and identified where they erred. We will not expect them to throw away such a fine opportunity to support a resolution in the best interest of all parties,” he declared.
