Akwa Ibom governor warns against violence, as police assure of hitch-free polls
Defend Your Votes, Delta PDP Charges Citizens
Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel has urged everyone to go out and vote in today’s elections, assuring them of their safety, even as he enjoined them to eschew any form of violence during the exercise.
The governor, in a statement yesterday by his Chief Press Secretary/Senior Special Assistant, Media, Ekerete Udoh, said, “As you go out to vote, be civil and peaceful. I want to assure visitors to our state and other election observers that their safety is guaranteed.”
Meanwhile, the state Police Command has assured the people of adequate security during the polls, saying it has deployed 9,210 personnel to the polling units, flashpoints and collation centres.
On Thursday, elders of the state, through its spokesman, Idongesit Nkanga, accused the police of aligning with the opposition party to cause mayhem during elections and facilitate rigging. But the command said adequate security measures had been put in place for a peaceful exercise across the 31 councils, warning that it would not tolerate any breach of the peace. To ensure crisis-free polls, he said restriction of movement of persons and vehicles from 6am to 6pm today was still in force, except persons on essential duties, who must carry their valid identification cards.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Delta State Chapter has called on its leaders, members and supporters to go out today, cast their votes, resist any form of intimidation and defend their votes. PDP said the call was necessitated to ensure that there would be no manipulation or sabotage of the electoral process by the ruling parry.
A statement by the state’s PDP Publicity Secretary, Ifeanyi Michael Osuoza, read,
“We hereby strongly and confidently call on all our members, loyalists and teeming supporters to disregard the unprovoked provocations and come out in their numbers to vote massively for the PDP, on Saturday.
We want to emphasise once again that the PDP will not be cowed and no amount of weird, desperate and mindless scheme or plot, will break the valiant resolve of Nigerians to vote PDP candidates at all levels in the elections. Power belongs to the people and the PDP is the Party of the people.”
