Akwa Ibom govt seeks full investigation into killing of job seeker

Akwa Ibom State Government has condemned the killing of Iniobong Umoren and pledged full investigation and prosecution of those who carried out the dastardly act.

Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Ini Ememobong, disclosed this in his address at the 2021 World Press Freedom Day celebration at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre in Uyo yesterday.

He described the incident as ‘disheartening’ considering the persons involved, adding that government would ensure full administration of justice to ensure that justice was served for the deceased, saying the state must remain safe for all citizens.

He also revealed that, the State Governor Udom Emmanuel has mandated the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Emmanuel Ekuwem, to lead top government officials on a condolence visit to the deceased’ family.

“The Akwa Ibom State Government is deeply saddened by the news of Iniobong Umoren, who was allegedly abducted, raped, assaulted and murdered by Uduak Frank Akpan. The news conveyed by the police is disheartening and most disturbing considering the age of the persons involved.

“While commending the police for the arrest and interrogation of the suspect, the governor has communicated his desire for prosecution of culprit and all persons involved in the crime to the police. This is the least that will be acceptable.

“We condemn in totality the gruesome acts that led to the loss of the life of an innocent young woman, whose sincere desire was to earn a decent living. Our state must remain a safe location for all peace loving and law abiding citizens at all times.

“We commiserate with the deceased family on the painful loss and pray God to comfort them,” he stated.

Meanwhile, public outcry and dismay is trailing the incident even as the police have said investigation was ongoing on the case, while the exhumed corpse of the victim had been deposited in the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) for autopsy.
