The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council has denied allegations that the federal government was plotting to assassinate former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
This comes as the council held its inaugural meeting in Abuja yesterday ahead of the kick-off of its campaign in Kaduna.
Challenging the African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain, Timi Frank, to substantiate his claim, the council disclosed that President Bola Tinubu has also directed security agencies to reinforce protection for presidential, vice-presidential, governorship and deputy governorship candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement yesterday, the council’s spokesperson, Dele Alake, described the allegation as grave and urged security agencies to invite Frank to substantiate it, stressing that any credible threat to life should be investigated irrespective of political affiliation.
Alake also urged Frank to provide any information in his possession that could assist security agencies in conducting a prompt investigation. However, the council categorically rejected any suggestion that the presidency or the APC Presidential Campaign Council was involved in a plot to assassinate Atiku or any opposition figure.
It further dismissed claims that security personnel attached to the former vice president had been withdrawn, insisting that Atiku continues to enjoy protection from the police and the Department of State Services (DSS), as his status as a former vice president entitles him to two levels of state-funded security protection.
