Australian woman marries Nigerian, 35, welcomes twins at 56 despite family concerns

An Australian woman, Angela Peters, has spoken about her marriage to a Nigerian man 21 years her junior, and the birth of their twin daughters, following IVF treatment in Nigeria. The story, which has sparked conversations about love, age, motherhood, and cross-cultural relationships, began in 2020 and has since gained attention on social media, the UK Mirror reported.

Peters, a mother of five and grandmother of twelve, said she had not expected to find love again after her divorce in 2019. “I had five incredible children and now could focus on myself, travel and starting my own business in disability services,” she said in an interview.

That changed when she joined a dating site and began chatting with Emeka, a Nigerian man based in Senegal. Although she did not pursue a relationship with him, she was intrigued when he shared a photo of his family, and she noticed his brother, Bright. “It was like a thunderbolt — I knew this was the man I was meant to be with,” she recalled.

With Emeka’s consent, she contacted Bright, and the two began a long-distance relationship. Despite their cultural differences and the geographical distance, they talked daily. Bright, who had never married or had children, told Angela he believed they would one day have twin daughters. Angela, then 52 and perimenopausal, told him she could no longer conceive, but he insisted that their future would include children.

They met in person for the first time in February 2021 when Angela flew to Nigeria. “Hugging him for the first time, I felt like I’d known him my whole life,” UK Mirror quoted her as saying. Bright proposed the following day, and they were married in a civil ceremony just over a week later.

Angela’s children, she admitted, were sceptical. “They were concerned their mum had met a scammer and were mortified I had married him so quickly,” she said. But she continued with the relationship and began exploring fertility options. After being denied IVF treatment in Australia due to age restrictions, the couple tried again in Nigeria, where a clinic agreed to perform the procedure using a donor egg and Bright’s sperm.

In December 2023, the couple learned they were expecting twins. The pregnancy progressed without complications, and in August 2024, Angela gave birth to two girls, Khorus and Knowyn. She described the experience as familiar and fulfilling: “It was like riding a bike,” she said, noting her extensive experience raising children.

Despite online criticism, particularly from those who believe she is too old to parent newborns, Angela remains unfazed. “No one cares when men have children in their 60s. There’s no guarantee on anyone’s lifespan,” she said. “To those who dream of motherhood later in life, don’t lose hope. My journey took me across continents, but it’s led me to this beautiful moment.”

Bright has since joined her in Australia, and the couple are raising the twins together. Angela says she shares her story publicly to inspire others struggling with fertility or societal judgment. “Now, both my hands and my heart are full,” she said.
