The American Military Veterans of Igbo Descent (AVID) has condemned a statement made by Mr. Chigozie Nnabugwu on national television, where he urged the Federal Government to extrajudicially execute the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

In a statement, the organisation said it views Nnabugwu’s comments as not only an incitement to murder but also a direct assault on constitutional governance, due process, and the dignity of the entire Igbo nation (Ndigbo).

It described the call for the extrajudicial killing of any citizen—regardless of circumstance—as a criminal provocation, a violation of the fundamental right to life, and a brazen attempt to subvert the judicial system.

“The suggestion that the state should murder a citizen as a shortcut to regional stability is barbaric, unlawful, and profoundly irresponsible,” AVID said.

The veterans said Nnabugwu’s statements breached all norms of civilised discourse, violated statutory protections against cybercrime and incitement to violence, and posed a real risk to public peace and national stability.

AVID then demanded an unreserved public retraction of the statement across major national media platforms and an apology to Nnamdi Kanu, his family, and the global Igbo community for advocating state-sponsored violence against an Igbo son.

The veterans also demanded an unequivocal televised apology from the media house where Nnabugwu made the claim.

“As veterans who have served in defence of democracy, liberty, and the rule of law, AVID will not remain silent while the sanctity of human life and judicial order is degraded. The path to lasting peace in the South-East—and Nigeria as a whole—lies in justice, adherence to court rulings, constructive political dialogue, and respect for basic human rights, not state-sanctioned assassination or media-driven incitement,” AVID said.
