AWALCO urges journalists to champion regional peace, unity

Nigeria Union of Journalists

In a call to action marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan, the President of the Association of West African Legislative Correspondents (AWALCO), Mr. Innocent Odoh, has urged journalists across the sub-region to prioritise peace and regional unity in their reportage.

In a goodwill message released by the association’s Publicity Secretary, Princess-Ekwi Ajide, Odoh extended warm congratulations to Muslim media practitioners and the broader community, praising their resilience and unwavering dedication to truth-telling amid a shifting and often challenging media landscape.

Odoh described Eid-el-Fitr as a significant period of sacrifice and spiritual renewal, calling on journalists to integrate these values into their professional duties. He emphasised that the media must serve as a bridge-builder and an instrument for integration, particularly as West Africa navigates complex socio-political and security hurdles.

“At a time when our region faces complex security and socio-political challenges, the role of journalists has never been more critical. You are not just storytellers; you are bridge-builders, agenda-setters, and custodians of public trust.

“Let your reports promote understanding over division, truth over misinformation, and unity over discord. West Africa needs a media that inspires hope, fosters dialogue, and strengthens the bonds that hold us together,” Odoh stated.

According to him, the critical role of the journalist extends beyond mere storytelling. “They are the custodians of public trust who must choose to promote understanding over division and factual reporting over the spread of misinformation,” he noted.

The AWALCO leader further stressed that credible, ethical journalism remains the bedrock of sustainable development and democratic stability in the region.

He noted that by upholding the highest standards of accuracy and fairness, media practitioners can foster the dialogue necessary to strengthen the bonds between nations.

He encouraged all journalists to use the spirit of the season to recommit to impactful storytelling that inspires hope, while wishing the Muslim faithful a joyous and prosperous celebration that brings lasting peace to the West African region.
