The Bishops and Clergy Council of Niger Delta, Nigeria (BCCNDN) has rallied support for the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), insisting that the once restive oil-rich region has recorded tremendous peace and improvement under the programme.

They noted that Prof. Charles Dokubo’s leadership of the programme brought better life for the people.

The forum of gospel ministers, who work in various parts of the Niger Delta region, observed that skills acquisition and other projects of the programme initiated by Dokubo yielded visible results and drastically reduced militancy.

Dokubo was honoured with Apostle of Peace award, as a reward for his determination to change the Niger Delta narrative within nine months in office.

The 22-member delegation of the council that visited Dokubo in Abuja was led by archbishop of the Calvary Temple, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Boma Lawson.

Lawson expressed the desire of the group to partner the amnesty office in the area of counselling for ex-agitators in the programme, to restore morals that would impact positively on their lives.

He urged Dokubo to include members of the council whenever special purpose committees are set up across the Niger Delta to create an avenue for religious leaders to interface with beneficiaries.

In his remarks, Dokubo lamented the lack of commitment by some youths in the Niger Delta to optimise opportunities inherent in the programme and disclosed his determination to ensure fresh initiatives to uplift the lives of the people.

“It is a painful thing that our people do not want to use this office to empower themselves. This office was not created for me, neither was it created for any of the former SAs. It is to empower the Niger Delta people; to ensure that they are nursed back to life, for them to be in charge of their fortune and future. That is what I intend doing.”
