A 19-year-old bride Saudat Jibrin on Thursday was sentenced to death by hanging for killing her new husband Salisu Idris nine days after their wedding.

Saudat who was arrested by the police in May 2025 for the alleged murder was found guilty by Justice Maryam Sabo of the state high court on miller road 14 months after.

The presiding Judge had held that the prosecution Barr. Lamido Abba Sorondinki, proved the charge of culpable homicide against the convict beyond reasonable doubt.

In her Judgement, Justice Sabo said the maximum penalty for the charge becomes pertinent to serve as a deterrent just as she held that the convict however possesses the right of appeal with the first 90 days from the day of the judgement.

Jibrin, a resident of Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State, was arraigned on a one-count charge of culpable homicide.

The prosecution counsel had told the court that “at about 9:00 p.m., the defendant allegedly laced her husband’s “Zobo” drink with a harmful substance before slashing his throat with a knife.

The prosecution had invited two witnesses during the 14 months old trial to establish its case against the defendant. The prosecution maintained that the offence contravenes Section 221(a) of the Penal Code.

However, the defence counsel, Abdulfatah Muhammad, pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy, arguing that his client had undergone significant reformation while in custody.

Muhammad told the court that Jibrin had memorised the Holy Qur’an during her detention and appealed for leniency, noting that she is the first child of her parents and that her younger siblings depend on her.
