…Launch manhunt after mob attack on Ekori Division

The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a murder suspect in connection with the killing of a 42-year-old man at Kekoti, Ajere in Yakurr Local Government Area, and launched a manhunt for those who attacked the Ekori Police Division in the aftermath of the incident.

In a press release issued on Sunday and signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, the Command said the incident occurred at about 1:00 am on 27th September, 2026, following a misunderstanding over N500.

According to the Police, the victim, Ayei Ekpe Ibor, 42, of Okonobngha, Ajere, was allegedly stabbed at Kekoti, Ajere, during an altercation with Ebino Mbang Ikpi, male, of Kekoti, Ajere. The dispute was reportedly over N500 said to have been given as a gift to both men, which degenerated into a fight. Ibor was confirmed dead following the stabbing, while the suspect fled the scene.

Police operatives immediately commenced a search for the suspect and for recovery of the deceased for medical certification.

At about 8:40 am the same day, operatives tracked and arrested Ebino Mbang Ikpi at his hideout in the Ajere-Ekori area. He was taken to Yakurr Division for detention and further investigation.

Shortly after the arrest, tension escalated as sympathisers and other persons mobilised and attacked the Ekori Police Division, demanding the release of the suspect. On discovering he was not at the station, the group allegedly resorted to hurling stones at the facility, damaging seven windows, the DPO/DCO office door, six plastic chairs, a wall mirror, part of the roofing and the passenger-side glass of the DPO’s official vehicle.

The mob also attacked the residence of the Ajere Youth Leader, Omini Jacob, on allegation that he assisted the Police.

Police operatives responded promptly, dispersed the crowd and restored normalcy. The situation has since been brought under control, with the station reinforced by ACPOL Ugep and the VCRU, Ugep.

The Commissioner of Police, Cross River State Command, CP Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, has directed that the murder suspect be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation and prosecution.

He has also ordered intensified efforts to identify and arrest all persons involved in the attack and destruction of Police and private property.

The Command urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, warning that while it will continue to protect the rights of all persons, attacks on Police formations, destruction of property and attempts to obstruct criminal investigations will be dealt with in accordance with the law.

The Police said further developments will be communicated as investigation progresses.
