Customs intercepts 339 donkey skins, repackaged foreign rice in Kano

Besides, the command said it intercepted contrabands including used clothes with total Duty Paid Value (DPV) of over N1.8 billion.
  
The Commands’ Controller, Comptroller Suleiman Pai Umar, told newsmen yesterday, that Customs is duty bound to protect the life of animals from extinction, stressing that the lorry loaded with donkey skins was intercepted after receiving intelligent information.
  
Comptroller Suleiman stated that 1,040 bags of 50kg foreign parboiled rice with a DPV of over N69 million.
   
According to him, some of the foreign rice was repackaged in bags of beans and flour to outsmart the customs officer at the border only to be uncovered by the intelligent officers .
  
Other confiscated items, he said include cartons of spaghetti, couscous, powdered milk,  cream milk, Eva Soap and batteries.q
  
He said 10 persons were arrested in connection with the seizures, one of whom was found with huge fake foreign currency.
  
The Customs boss lamented lack of conviction in the last 12 months, blaming it on slow pace prosecution at Federal high courts.
