Dangote, Sunmonu to bag honorary doctorates at ABU convocation



President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, and former president of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Hassan Sunmonu, will bag honorary doctoral degrees on Saturday, as Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, graduates 15,289.

While Dangote adds Doctor of Letters to his cap, Sunmonu becomes Doctor of Science.

The university’s registrar, Abdullah Kundila, stated yesterday that during the coming 41st convocation, 10,803 students would be awarded first degrees and 4,486 post-graduate degrees and diplomas.

Also, 81 students will be awarded first class degrees from various departments of the institution.

Kundila explained that the two prominent Nigerians would be honoured “for their immense contribution to the economic development of Nigeria and humanity in general.”

Other activities lined up for the convocation include commissioning of projects in the university by the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, on Friday.

The projects are as follows: twin deanery building for faculties of Life and Physical Sciences, Geology Department extension, ABU Business School extension, ABU Site II entrance gate, Area G internal road, and Biochemistry Department extension.

The convocation lecture entitled ‘It’s All About the Human Capital …Stupid’ will be delivered on Friday at the University Assembly Hall by founder/chairman of
Africa Initiative for Governance (AIG) and former president, Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), Mr. Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede.

Ten blocks consisting 360 rooms built at ABU Site II and donated to ABU by Dangote to alleviate the acute shortage of students’ accommodation will also be commissioned.

The first visitor of ABU, President Muhammadu Buhari, is expected to grace the occasion.
