The Delta State Government has condemned the political violence that erupted in Asaba, the state capital, on Saturday, resulting in the death of one person and leaving five others seriously injured.

The government described the incident as unacceptable and warned political parties, their leaders and supporters against engaging in activities capable of undermining public peace, security and democratic participation in the state.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, the government reiterated its zero tolerance for political violence, intimidation and other forms of political rascality.

Aniagwu said the state government had repeatedly cautioned political parties against organising activities capable of disrupting public order, noting that the unfortunate incident could have been avoided if the organisers had complied with security advice.

According to him, security agencies had advised the organisers to shelve the proposed street march and instead conduct their campaign at a designated venue where adequate security arrangements could be provided.

He expressed concern that the advice was allegedly ignored, resulting in a confrontation that claimed one life and left five other persons seriously injured.

The government consequently called on the police to undertake a comprehensive and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the violence and ensure that all those found culpable are brought to justice.

It further warned that politically motivated attacks against individuals or groups would not be tolerated, irrespective of their political affiliations.

Aniagwu stressed that Delta State remained a safe environment for residents and visitors, insisting that the government would not allow the actions of individuals or groups to threaten the peaceful atmosphere in the state.

He urged political parties, their leaders and supporters to exercise restraint and ensure that their political activities conform strictly to the provisions of the law.
