The Edo State Government has said the state Health Insurance Scheme (Edo-HIS) will strengthen healthcare delivery, reduce mortality and reduce out-of-pocket health expenditure in the state.

Director-General, Edo State Health Insurance Commission, Dr. Rock Amegor, disclosed this when members of the Edo Progressive Indigenous Association (EPIA) visited him in Benin City.

Amegor noted that the commission had commenced enrolment of beneficiaries into the Edo-HIS with civil and public servants in the state’s ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs).

He added that the Edo-HIS was an initiative of the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration aimed at providing fully operational health insurance coverage to all Edo State residents.

He further expressed appreciation to members of EPIA for supporting the state government in ensuring the provision of accessible, quality and affordable healthcare for residents in the state

Amegor stated that the commission planned to enroll no fewer than 25,000 residents in the state for the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF).

He explained that it was a Federal Government initiative, implemented by the state government under the equity plan of the Edo-HIS, adding that the fund would help the vulnerable persons to have access to free medical care.

Speaking, President of EPIA, Chief Omogiade Edokpolor, urged residents to take advantage of the scheme to access quality and affordable healthcare services.

He commended the Edo State Government for taking deliberate steps towards providing universal health coverage for residents with the establishment of the Edo State Health Insurance Commission.

Edokpolor said the association would support the Governor Obaseki-led administration to improve access to quality and affordable healthcare for Edo people by encouraging and sensitising citizens to enroll in the scheme.
