Elderly witness slumps, dies in Ondo High Court

There was commotion, yesterday, when a yet-to-be-identified man slumped and died at an Ondo State High Court sitting in Oka, Ondo town. The deceased, who was said to be in his late 70s, had allegedly accompanied his friend to the court to stand as a witness in an ongoing case.

According to eyewitnesses, everyone was seated in the courtroom waiting for the judge when the man suddenly slumped. One of the eyewitnesses, a staff of the court, said the man, who appeared healthy, slumped suddenly and died immediately.

She said: “The man was in court with his friend. And suddenly, he stood up where he was seated and fell down, hit his head on the tiles, and passed on. He didn’t look like someone who was sick. He did not collide with anything or anybody.”

Another source within the court, who identified himself as Tunde Ariyo, said the court clerk and some litigants made efforts to get officers of the Enu-Owa Police Division to evacuate the remains to a mortuary.

The police at Enu-Owa Division confirmed the incident, adding that the case would be transferred to the command’s headquarters in Akure, the state capital.
